"Frida Kahlo – Her Photos" at Mai Manó House in Budapest, Hungary

18 October 2024 | 09 February 2025

More than 200 images from different times in the well-known Mexican artist's life will be on display in the exhibition, including pieces by well-known photographers like Edward Weston, Brassaï, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Gisèle Freund, Nickolas Muray, and Man Ray.

Nearly a million people have seen the exhibition since it debuted in 2009 in Mexico City, during its first presentation. The exhibition has since traveled to twenty different cities.

Even though Frida valued photography, a sizable portion of her collection remained secret from the public for many years. After Frida passed away in 1954, her husband Diego Rivera gave the Mexican people their home, also known as the Blue House in Mexico City, so they could use it as a museum honoring Frida's life and contributions. This marked the start of what is now one of the most well-known museums in the world, the Frida Kahlo Museum.

Diego requested that some of Frida's artwork and artifacts be kept hidden from prying eyes, even though he gave them to the museum. This is the primary reason this private collection, which contained over 6,000 images, a few sketches, and letters, clothes and medicines were shut down for a long fifty years. The bathroom of a Blue House was selected to store those treasures, and as a result, it took on an almost legendary quality.

Only in 2003 was the numbed archive opened for business. Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, a well-known Mexican photographer and historian of Mexican photography, curated this exhibition using a portion of the recently discovered photos. The exhibition Frida Kahlo - Her Photos features 241 never-before-seen images of Frida that both personally touched her and depict a range of events and characters from her life.

The exhibition is thematically divided into six sections – The Origins; The Blue House; Politics, Revolutions and Diego; Her Broken Body; Frida’s Loves; and Photography.

The show's catalogue, Frida Kahlo - Her Photos, features every piece of art displayed in the exhibition as well as many more. It is the product of a meticulous selection from the thousands of photos that were discovered in the locked restroom.
