Museo Casa Kahlo - Mexico City

27 September 2025

A new museum dedicated to Frida Kahlo opened on September 27, 2025 in Mexico City’s Coyoacán district.

Located in a structure called Casa Roja, the museum "Museo Casa Kahlo" is only a few doors away from the red house, the famous Museo Frida Kahlo, also known as Casa Azul.

Artworks and personal items from Kahlo's adult life are on display at Casa Azul, which has been a museum since 1958. On the other hand, "Museo Casa Kahlo" highlights her early life, her family, and her upbringing. It is the first museum dedicated to Frida Kahlo run by her relatives.

The family of Frida Kahlo has owned Casa Roja for many generations. Her parents had owned the house before Frida purchased it from them. She gave it to Cristina Kahlo, her sister, so she could live with her family. The only sibling of Frida to have children was Cristina. Frida's grand-niece and Cristina's granddaughter, Mara Romeo Kahlo, later lived in the house, which remained in the family.
The descendants of Frida, including Mara Romeo Kahlo, her daughter Mara De Anda Kahlo, and Frida Hentschel Romeo, another of Frida's great-grand-nieces, are currently transforming the house into a museum. Their joint goal is to present more intimate tales of Frida and demonstrate how her early life influenced her artistic development.

A number of previously unexhibited objects are on display at the museum. Among them is Frida Kahlo's initial oil painting, which she produced prior to choosing to pursue painting as a career. There are also childhood photos, dolls, jewelry, clothes, letters, and a piece of embroidery she did when she was five years old.
A recently found mural, thought to be the only mural Frida Kahlo ever painted, is among the most unusual objects that are on exhibit. Visitors can get a better look at Frida's private life before she gained notoriety thanks to these artifacts.

While Casa Azul concentrates on Frida Kahlo's marriage to Diego Rivera and her subsequent profession, Museo Casa Kahlo examines how her family influenced her formative years. It highlights the role of her father, photographer Guillermo Kahlo, as well as her relationship with her sister, Cristina. Helping him in his studio taught Frida how to develop and retouch photographs, which might have shaped her artistic vision.

The museum's founders wish to clarify how her relationships and family life shaped her growth. Photographs, personal belongings, and the actual layout of the room will all be used to convey this.

The family says this museum has always been a dream. They hope it will give new artists with similar cultural roots a platform and help people understand how Frida's upbringing influenced her work.

On September 27, 2025 the museum opened to the public. In the same neighborhood where she was born and raised, it provides a fresh and more intimate look at one of Mexico's most significant artists.

The museum is located at Aguayo 54, in the Carmen neighborhood of Coyoacán.
