A narrative starting with images of Frida and Marilyn as children up to the last shots of them in life, in an alternation of public and private images.
"Frida Marilyn - Vite Parallele" is an unprecedented photographic exhibition that compares two iconic figures of the 20th century: Frida Kahlo and Marilyn Monroe. Seemingly distant in context and personality, the two women shared fragility, unfulfilled desires, overwhelming passions and an untimely end.
Told through the lenses of the greatest photographers of their time, Frida and Marilyn emerge in this exhibition as complex symbols of femininity: one an emblem of political and cultural commitment, the other an idealisation of beauty and sensuality. Two parallel existences that, despite their contrasts, are mirrored in the common condition of women in an era marked by discrimination and stereotypes.
The exhibition explores the profound parallels between the two women: their unfulfilled longing for motherhood, their political activism, and their entanglements with powerful, often overwhelming men — from Diego Rivera to Arthur Miller, from Joe DiMaggio to John F. Kennedy — culminating in the surprising connection with photographer Nickolas Muray, a shared lover whose affair with Marilyn came to light only after her death.
In addition to a rich collection of photographs, the exhibition features contemporary artistic tributes — from Andy Warhol’s iconic portraits of Marilyn to works by Mimmo Rotella, Marco Lodola, Zhang Hongmei, and Xu De Qi, the only artist officially authorized to reproduce the renowned painting Las Dos Fridas.
The exhibition is curated by Vincenzo Sanfo, with a critical text by Carolina Dema.
