"Frida Kahlo - Her photos" at the MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, Greece

03 October 2025 | 04 January 2026

This exhibition will run to MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, from October 3, 2025 to January 4, 2026, for the first time in Greece, which is the next city on the list of over twenty places where "Frida Kahlo - Her Photos" has been shown abroad.

The exhibition is organized by the Frida Kahlo Museum and the Diego Rivera-Anahuacalli Museum of Mexico City. 241 photographs selected by Mexican photographer Pablo Ortiz Monasterio from an original collection of about 6,000 images will be on display at the MOMus-Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, reviving public appreciation of Kahlo's innovative, unconventional, and intense personality.

In addition to her father, Guillermo Kahlo, whom she adored, the collection includes priceless portraits that were gifted to her by renowned photographers like Man Ray, Brassai, and Tina Modotti. They all had different perspectives on her, and Kahlo even used the photographs to create her paintings. Within all of this, she appears to be brought to the present by four photographs that she took herself, signed, and one that is credited to her.

The director of the Frida Kahlo Museum, Perla Labarthe Alvarez, talked to the Greek daily newspaper Kathimerini about the photo collection that will make its debut at MOMus.

"In the exhibition we also see more personal photographs of her. What do they reveal about her?

They show us a sincere woman, who does not hide her pain. The photo of her friend and lover Nickolas Muray, where she is shown lying in bed after the accident, is a typical example. But others, with friends, with lovers, with people who stood by her, reveal how close her relationship with the image was. You will see, for example, photos of Tina Modotti – an artist who also gave her photography advice. These images are not just souvenirs. It is as if she herself identifies with the faces, making them part of herself. And of course, Diego’s photos have a special place, some even with humorous interventions. They are her loves, on paper."
