"Frida and Diego: The Last Dream" at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, US

21 March 2026 | 12 September 2026

Through a custom gallery design created in partnership with the Metropolitan Opera, "Frida and Diego: The Last Dream" aims to recontextualize the relationship between these two significant twentieth-century figures using only the museum's current collection.

An interdisciplinary approach that combines art history and scenography sets the exhibition apart. To create an immersive setting for the installation, MoMA has hired Jon Bausor, the stage set and co-costume designer for the opera "El Ultimo Sueño de Frida y Diego". In order to create a "otherworldly setting" that provides a fresh framework for viewing Kahlo and Rivera's artwork, Bausor's design aims to transfer the narrative atmosphere of the stage production into the gallery space.

The museum's Department of Painting and Sculpture's important holdings are the focus of the curatorial scope. Five paintings and a drawing by Kahlo, including the groundbreaking "Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair" and "Fulang-Chang and I", will be on display. These will be paired with more than a dozen pieces by Rivera, including "Agrarian Leader Zapata" and "Flower Festival: Feast of Santa Anita". Photographic portraits of the couple by renowned photographers like Leo Matiz and Lola Álvarez Bravo will also be included in the exhibition to provide additional historical context.

The exhibition is organized by Beverly Adams, The Estrellita Brodsky Curator of Latin American Art, in collaboration with Jon Bausor. The curatorial team includes Caitlin Chaisson and Rachel Remick, Curatorial Assistants within the Department of Painting and Sculpture.

"Frida and Diego: The Last Dream" will be on view at The Museum of Modern Art from March 21 through September 12, 2026. The Metropolitan Opera’s production, "El Ultimo Sueño de Frida y Diego", directed by Deborah Colker, will premiere on May 14 and run through June 5, 2026.
