Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo House-Studio Museum - Mexico City

01 April 2016

One of the greatest locations for a thorough examination of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo is the "Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo", providing also a comprehensive review of their generation of artists.
One of the first "functionalist" structures in Latin America, designed by architect Juan O'Gorman, the project featured two separate studios for both Rivera and Frida Kahlo, as well as a house for both artist.
Each studio is a smooth concrete block; one is blue, and the other is red and white. Only a tiny bridge on the top floor connects these separate structures.
The museum, which is located in the San Ángel neighbourhood, currently consists of three structures: two houses that serve as studios and a photography lab that was also created by O'Gorman.
1931 saw the start of construction, which ended the following year. The museum opened only in 1986. In 1995, the twin studios underwent restoration. Today, the "Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo" is considered the most important existing example of functionalist architecture in the country.

While each artist's work is on display, the museum also houses significant works of folk art, furnishings, and, of course, stunning architectural interiors, lighting, and natural illumination. The gardens and terraces also provide striking examples of what were, at the time, novel approaches to the use of indigenous plants and stone.
