Frida Kahlo at "Elles font l'art", a free online course at the Pompidou Centre, Paris

21 February 2021

The Center Pompidou has just opened its new MOOC  "Elles font l' art", consisting of videos, quizzes and activities, dedicated this year to women artists from 1900 to the present day.

MOOC sequences:

Introduction: Why “Elles”?

Sequence 1: Where are the women in the history of art?
Sequence 2: They are the avant-garde 1910-1930
Sequence 3: The feminist turn 1960-1970
Sequence 4: Gender disorders 1980 to the present day
Sequence 5: What now?

The program is interested in "visual artists, painters, photographers, videographers or performers of all nationalities" who "made and [...] still do the art of the XXth and XXIst centuries". At the end of each sequence, a small evaluation is offered by the teaching team, made up of Thérèse St-Gelais, professor of art history at UQAM, specializing in themes of gender and feminism; Karolina Ziebinska-Lewandowska, curator specializing in photography at the National Museum of Modern Art; and Catherine Lascault, lecturer at the Center Pompidou. "If you obtain at least the mark of 14/20 in these quizzes, a certificate of achievement will be issued to you after the end of the MOOC", specifies the museum.

The last sequence of the MOOC leaves the floor to contemporary artists, "so that they can express themselves on their art and on this status of woman artist". Among other things, the careers of Frida Kahlo, Niki de Saint Phalle, Orlan and Pénélope Bagieu, as well as other artists with less famous names, will be mentioned. Through this initiative, the Center Pompidou declares that it wants to "strongly affirm its commitment to women and in favor of gender equality".

The Course started on January 25th, 2021 and will end on June 25th, 2021.
