The 1933 piece by Frida Kahlo that she disliked and dubbed "Self-Portrait. Very ugly" ("Autorretrato. Very feo") and then tossed it away, was placed up for auction at Christie's auction house in New York by an unidentified vendor.
Prior to the sale, the piece was projected to sell for up to $10 million, but it actually brought in $8.63 million. The portrait in Frida's black book is special since it was made using the fresco technique, which she used sparingly in her works, and was 22.2 to 27.3 cm in size.
According to rumors, a friend by the name of Lucienne Bloch found the object while she was visiting, discreetly purchased it, and then auctioned it off.
The artwork "Diego and me" by Frida Kahlo was sold last year for $34.9 million, making it the artist's most expensive painting to date.
