RAH Azul was born in East Los Angeles to Mexican parents, who migrated to the United States from the region of Jalisco.
He creates elaborate portraits of Mexican icons and pop culture figures using blue hues, includig several portraits of Frida Kahlo that capture both her likeness and her free spirit. The artist plays with shades from very light blue to deep indigo to capture the details that make up Kahlo’s clothes and facial features.
RAH Azul uses a limited color scheme, but his portraits are full of details and shades. In order to capture the details of Kahlo's clothing and facial features, the artist experiments with a spectrum of blue hues, from very light blue to deep indigo, much like pencil and charcoal artists use a black and white palette.
The way RAH Azul captures the spirit of his subjects on canvas is the real magic of his monochromatic paintings. In Kahlo's case, this is evident in the lines and spirals she incorporates into the composition, giving the impression that the Mexican painter's own skin reflects the energy and creativeness of her creations. The portrait is framed in a distinctive way by the background's matching swirly patterns that entwine with flowers, especially those in Kahlo's hair.
