Tate Modern and Ace of Hearts 1st phase of the campaign for "Frida:The Making of an Icon"

10 June 2026

Today, Tate Modern and Ace of Hearts unveiled the first phase of the campaign for the gallery's highly anticipated exhibition, starting a summer-long celebration of Frida Kahlo in London.

One of the few artists in history who can be identified from a single fragment is Frida Kahlo. It only takes a quick look at her red lips or thick, joined eyebrows to recognize her. Frida transcended the art world to become an icon in her own sense, and her image is still among the most recognizable in world culture more than 70 years after her passing.

The exhibition teaser's main creative concept is that instant recognition. Instead of introducing Frida, the series purposefully omits details, giving viewers only fleeting glimpses of the artwork and portraits connected to her life and legacy. The creative blends artwork from various aspects of Frida's life story with portraits and interpretations by artists who contributed to her cultural legacy. The focal point is Frida Kahlo's 1940 painting "Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird," which is accompanied by pieces by renowned Chicano printmaker Richard Duardo, Japanese artist Yasumasa Morimura, and Hungarian-American photographer Nickolas Muray, who had a ten-year romance with Frida.

The teaser is currently available on paid social media, flyposters, and OOH (see the YouTube video below). As the exhibition gets closer to its June 25 opening, the campaign will continue to develop in stages throughout the summer, progressively unveiling more of the imagery.

Rasmus Smith Bech, ECD at Ace of Hearts said, “There’s something special about seeing the first teasers appear across the city and knowing it’s the start of something much bigger. Across the summer, we’ll be opening up Frida’s world through a range of work that unfolds across London, inviting people to experience her in different ways. Frida is a global symbol who represents so much from creativity to resilience to individuality and self-expression. Very few others can claim to have that level of connection across generations and borders. It’s a real privilege to work with Tate Modern on a project of this scale on our doorstep at Ace of Hearts. We hope we can help launch the exhibition as a genuine cultural moment for the city and one of the defining events of London's summer.”
