Produced by the Shakespeare Theatre Company, "Frida... a Self Portrait" is written and performed by Brazilian artist Vanessa Severo.
Severo explores the parallels between their two lives. She was born with a congenital defect in her left hand and felt an emotional connection with Frida. She took a plane to Mexico City, went into Kahlo's Blue House, and started writing the play in which she would play the lead. That journey culminated in "Frida... A Self-Portrait." The monologue, which alternates between two women over time, is set in 1954, as her life was coming to an end, and Kahlo is discussing her paintings, marriages, body, and grief with a journalist at home. And Severo, switching between personas is telling Frida's story and her own.
In a visually striking piece that encourages us all to realise that we are not alone, Frida's evocative art, complicated love life, and distinct philosophy are portrayed through music and movement.
