Frida among the "Absolute Beginners" by Gino Rubio at Mobius Gallery, Bucharest Sep18 – Oct 10, 2026

16 September 2026

With immense pleasure, Mobius presents Gino Rubert's second solo exhibition, "Absolute Beginners". The Spanish artist returns with a completely new body of work, three years after his debut in Romanian contemporary art with "Time to set the cage on fire" (2023).

"Absolute Beginners" brings together recent mixed-media paintings, brings viewers to a humorous, knowledgeable, and slightly eerie world where the entire history of painting is referred to as to a single stage and disarmingly asked to start over.
Rubert uses a dense and visually appealing technique in his work: photographic collage combined with fabric, pins, oil and acrylic, and found objects. Every canvas acts more like a scene than a picture: lit, cast, and choreographed, a tiny, intense theatre. As in all of his works, art history, desire, memory, and mortality come back here, bound together by a magical realism of joyous, loving intensity that celebrates both death and love in harmony.
A collection of works that show improbable interactions between the artists who influenced Rubert's own conception of painting is the source of the exhibition's title. As if they had always been in the same room at the same time, Picasso, Duchamp, Frida Kahlo, Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Dalí, Miró, Tàpies, and others come together with total naturalness. These scenes are set inside painting studios and drawing academies, places dedicated to apprenticeship, and Rubert transforms them into a parallel reality where the strange and the familiar coexist harmoniously. His pantheon of contemporary masters stands out for their curiosity and desire to never stop learning; they are still, in one way or another, absolute beginners.
