"Frida' s Paradox" at the Sea World Culture and Arts Center in Shenzhen, China
12 July 2025 | 15 September 2025Renowned for her vivid use of color, depictions of the human body in pieces, and intensely expressive gaze, Frida Kahlo made a lasting impact on 20th-century art and continues to be a powerful cultural symbol.
The exhibition, titled "Frida's Paradox," presents more than 250 significant works, including original oil paintings, watercolors, personal artifacts, and handwritten correspondence.
Rather than centering only on Frida Kahlo’s well-known early self-portraits, the exhibition encourages visitors to uncover the more intimate and lesser-known dimensions of her life and work, revealing the contradictions and depth behind her public identity.
Curated by Cristina Kahlo, Frida’s great-niece, and Juan Rafael Coronel Rivera, Diego Rivera’s grandson, the exhibition provides new perspectives on her upbringing, her influences from pre-Columbian art and Mexican folk culture, and the traditional indigenous attire and jewelry she wore. It also highlights her later still lifes and writings, many of which are on display in China for the first time.
