The first major retrospective of the work of renowned Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide's in Belgium explores subjects like temporariness, social relationships, and identity.
One of Iturbide's self-portraits served as the inspiration for the exhibition's title, "Eyes to fly with" which alludes to her belief that photography can be used to explore oneself and the outside world. According to Iturbide, photography has an emancipatory quality that allows one to see reality from different perspectives.
You will learn about the significant social and economic roles played by women from the Zapotec community in Oaxaca, among other things. By putting women at the center of her work, Graciela Iturbide defies conventional ideas about gender. She explores how identity is shaped by things like migration, living circumstances, and ancestry in the series White Fence, as well as how communities change and adapt over time.
Also included in the collection are intimate photographs of Frida Kahlo's bathroom, a space that—together with numerous personal items—was kept sealed for fifty years following her death.
