“Frida” is a play written, directed and performed by Jessica Ferro, featuring the voices of Luca Ward and Edoardo Siravo.
A Frida Kahlo who takes her destiny into her own hands, turns the balance of power on its head and uses art as a means of rediscovering herself.
The production delves into the Mexican painter’s most intimate relationships through a psychological game in which illusion and reality become intertwined. Ferro’s portrayal of Frida asserts her right to choose, even when this means breaking the rules of love and questioning the relationships that have shaped her life.
Her solitude is filled with presences, memories and the mind’s projections. Moving around her are her devoted lover Nickolas, with his camera lens; her friend Lucienne; the sorrowful ghost of Angelina; and her sister Cristina, the guardian of affections and unspeakable secrets.
It is above all this latter relationship – ambiguous and profound – that lies at the heart of the narrative. These bonds become a battleground, whilst the figures who dominated Frida’s past find themselves ultimately involved in a reversal of roles: it’s her who is trying to play the game.
